Review of the First Week
Today is Sunday, and the weather in Shanghai is very comfortable. Eduardo and Sabina agreed to meet at Jing’an Park. This week has passed very quickly, and they have many things to say to each other.
Eduardo spoke first: “I like my dormitory life very much. Although the room is not very big, my roommate Zhang Ming is very friendly. He taught me how to use mobile payment and also took me to the canteen to eat delicious steamed buns.” Eduardo feels that having a Chinese roommate is very helpful for learning Chinese.
Sabina also shared her story: “My host family is very good to me. Auntie Wang taught me to make rice porridge, and Xiaoming practiced English with me. Although my Chinese is not yet fluent, I dare to go to the supermarket to buy things now. I bought some tea and plan to send it back to Belgium.”
They walked together on the small path in the park and saw many elderly people dancing and doing Tai Chi. Sabina felt that Shanghai not only has modern tall buildings but also has a very traditional life.
At noon, they drank coffee at a coffee shop near the park. They took out the campus map they bought this week and began to discuss next week’s courses. Eduardo said, “Next Monday we will start formal classes; I am a little nervous, but mostly excited.”
Sabina nodded and said with a smile, “Yes, we will definitely learn a lot of new knowledge. Life in Shanghai is really interesting!” The sun slowly set, and the two good friends said goodbye under the beautiful sunset, getting ready to welcome the new week.

Grammar
Negative Comparisons with “Bu jin… hai…” (不仅…还…)
In HSK2, the structure 不仅…还… is used to provide additional information about a subject. It emphasizes that multiple qualities or situations exist simultaneously, such as Shanghai’s mix of modern and traditional elements.
Examples:
上海不仅有现代的高楼,还有很传统的生活。
The use of “Geng” (更) for Emphasis
The adverb 更 is used before an adjective to indicate a higher degree, often comparing two states or feelings. In this story, Eduardo uses it to compare his nervousness with his excitement.
Examples:
我有一点儿紧张,但更多的是兴奋。
Idiomatic Expressions
一定会
This expression is used to express strong certainty or a promise about the future. It is a common way for HSK2 learners to express confidence in their goals.
Example: 我们一定会学到很多新知识。
真有趣
Using “真” before “有趣” is a standard exclamation to express that an experience or situation is genuinely enjoyable and engaging.
Example: 在上海的生活真有趣!
Cultural Insights
Parks in China are vital centers for communal activity. You will frequently see 老人 (elderly people) gathering to 跳舞 (square dance) or 打太极拳. This reflects a social culture where public spaces are used for health and community bonding across generations.
The concept of 分享 (sharing) stories is a common way to build 友谊 (friendship) in China. International students often find that comparing their varied living situations (like dorms vs. host families) helps them understand the diverse aspects of Chinese society more quickly.
